Imagine your company is developing a new product that needs testing that cannot be completed in-house. To go to an external company can be more expensive and it takes time to get their team up to speed. To go to a research university would mean months of negotiating the collaboration agreement and intellectual property rights. What if there was a collaborator to connect you to these testing resources in less time for less money? This is our role at Blue Highway – we’re technology accelerators.

Our client Welch Allyn was developing a next generation blood pressure device known as the EcoCuff. The unique blood pressure cuff is the first disposable cuff on the market that brings together cross-contamination control, cost containment and environmental impact. Blue Highway was able to connect Welch Allyn’s R&D team with Syracuse Biomaterials Institute (SBI) through Blue Highway’s existing partnership with Syracuse University (SU).

Within two weeks an agreement was in place and work began at SBI. Welch Allyn provided funding for one graduate student and one undergraduate student to test the materials of the EcoCuff™, allowing them to gain research experience on a real product that successfully went to market. In exchange, Welch Allyn gained access to the resources and expertise of a large research university.

By joining Welch Allyn’s team, Blue Highway was able to accelerate the development of EcoCuff™. Welch Allyn saved time and money and SU students gained valuable real-world experience. Blue Highway exists to create these win-win outcomes by bridging academia and industry to bring revolutionary healthcare innovations to market.

Blue Highway Senior Researcher in Computer Science, Albert Goldfain, was recently invited to present at the Fourth International Conference on Biomedical Ontology (ICBO). This year’s conference will be held at Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, on July 8th-9th 2013.

Submissions were evaluated by the ICBO committee based on likelihood of success, taking into account qualifications and experience; relevance and utility to ICBO attendees; quality of proposal; and complimentary with ICBO program and overlap with other workshop or tutorials. The abstracts of all accepted submissions can be found on ICBO’s website.

Goldfain’s research, Ontology Based Annotation of Contextualized Vital Signs, centers on representing the kinetic state of a patient (posture, motion, and activity) during vital sign measurement, an important part of continuous morning applications. Co-authors include Min Xu, Blue Highway Senior Researcher in Mathematics, Jonathan Bona and Barry Smith.

Min Xu

The research presents an automated annotation system for vital signs measurement that uses ontologies from the Open Biomedical Ontology Foundry (OBO Foundry) to represent the patient’s kinetic state at the time of measurement. The annotation system is applied to data generated by a wearable personal status monitoring (PSM) device. The paper demonstrates how annotated PSM data can be queried for contextualized vital signs as well as sensor algorithm configuration parameters.

Earlier this month, we sent our Annual Review to some close friends of Blue Highway. Due to their overwhelming positive response, we are making it accessible to the public. We are excited to announce that we have successfully completed our first year of operation as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Syracuse University. In 2012, we realized our new mission: to be the preeminent resource for accelerating technology development from concept to commercialization.

We are proud that our work on university spin-outs, technology, and product development has earned us recognition as industry thought leaders and experts. Over the year we have offered our collaborators and customers an accelerated, cost-effective and simple path to innovation.

Blue Highway’s first annual review highlights our:
